KPFT has championed the blues since it first hit the airwaves in 1970, playing 10 hours of uninterrupted blues every Sunday, with additional blues throughout the week. The various shows and volunteer hosts perform an amazing job, bringing news, events, new and old music to a huge audience along the Upper Texas Gulf Coast. The non-commercial station is almost entirely listener-sponsored, and derives a large portion of its support pledges from the Sunday blues programs every year. The blues is a core thread in the community-based radio tapestry that is Houston’s Pacifica Radio, KPFT-FM – 90.1 in Houston and 89.5 in Galveston, Texas.
