Part Time Love–Little Johnny Taylor (Galaxy, 1963)

Little Johnny Taylor (1943-2002) enjoyed popularity on the soul-blues circuit in the 1960s and ’70s but today his songs seem to be better known than his name. His biggest hit, one since performed by many other blues singers, was the hard-hitting ‘Part Time Love,’ innervated by his gospel-based delivery of Clay Hammond’s memorable lyrics. One of numerous cover versions was recorded for Stax by the similarly named Johnnie Taylor (of ‘Who’s Making Love’ fame), and the two singers, both Arkansas-born, were often confused. Little Johnny’s ‘Part Time’ peaked at No. 1 on the R&B charts in the Oct. 19, 1963, issue of Billboard.
