Bill Doggett had his own big band in Philadelphia before joining Lucky Millinder in 1940. Doggett played and arranged for the Ink Spots, Illinois Jacquet, Louis Jordan and Ella Fitzgerald before forming his own group in 1953. His was the first organ combo with both guitar and tenor sax. His best-known recording, Honky Tonk, Part 2′ was a No. 1 R&B hit on the Billboard charts in 1956. It is unique in that Doggett does not solo. Part one features the guitar work of Billy Butler while Part 2— – the hit side— – featured tenor sax man Clifford Scott.
