BMI’s roster of affiliated songwriters, composers and publishers is unsurpassed and includes outstanding creators in every style of musical composition, but of particular importance is its dominance in the Blues music genre. BMI has supported the work of Blues writers since its founding in 1940, at which time the major performing rights organization did not include many Blues-connected individuals in their membership. Blues continues to be a central element of BMI’s repertoire with 94% of the performers in the Blues Hall of Fame being BMI songwriters. As a result, BMI has been an anchor sponsor of the Blues Music Awards since the early 90s. Playing such a major role in the Blues biggest night illustrates how important the music is to BMI.
