A fixture on Austin’s public radio station KUT FM for more than 20 years, Larry Monroe is the host of one of the longest-running Blues radio shows in the country. And it was all an accident. One night in 1981, Monroe was set to host the Monday night Jazz show, but he was feeling kind of depressed so he declared it Blues Monday and started played all Blues records. Monroe recalls: ‘The following Monday somebody called and said, ‘I’d like to get my request in early for Blue Monday, so you’ll be sure to play it.’ I had no idea what he was talking about and said, ‘What?’ He replied, ‘Last week the show was ‘Blue Monday,’ isn’t that a regular show?’ I though about it for a second and said, ‘Yes, it is.” In addition to “Blue Monday,’ Monroe also hosts three other programs on KUT: the stream-of-conscious ‘Phil’s Music’ and ‘Segway City’ and the Lone Star State-themed ‘Texas Radio.’
