A mainstay at Rounder Records since the late ’70s, Billington was originally employed as a graphic artist for the the Boston roots label. But Billington had studio ambitions, and in 1978 he produced Johnny Shines album Hey Ba-Ba-Re Bop. Since then he has become one of Rounder’s most prolific house producers, with a deft ear and unerringly good taste. Though he works in a variety of genres, the Blues are most dear to him, and his work with the likes Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown, Irma Thomas, and the Holmes Brothers rank as some of the most memorable of recent years.
